Volunteer

The general idea about Computers for Communities is to match used computers that are no longer being used with people who can use them. Our model is based on similar volunteer equity programs with projects that focus on the following:

  1. Adoption: Volunteer 24 hours of your time with the Computers for Communities Project in the Adoption program to earn a computer
  2. Build / Install Program: Commit to learn how to build computers through building six machines with guidance and adopt the sixth one you build.

We will teach you everything you need to know through hands-on training, volunteer mentors and various resources. Learn more about what kind of opportunities we offer.

Build Program

Learn how to tear down a computer to Bare Metal and build it back up again. use diagnostic tools to ensure quality of components. Overcome tech anxiety by understanding the inner workings of a computer. If you like Lego, you'll love this.

Install Program

Do you enjoy repetitive and systematic tasks? Do you enjoy problem solving? Maybe you are a teacher at heart. Installing software and teaching others to do the same may be your calling.

Besides learning about what free and open source software is available, you'll also ensure that systems are loaded with basic software. This is the key group that affects the end user experience to ensure everything is working "out of the box". There is never a shortage of problem solving.

Our goal is a computer "That Just Works".

Adoption Program

Volunteer 24 hours of your time with the Computers for Communities Project in the Adoption program to earn a computer.

As a community-led program there are always tasks that need to be done. Everything from answering emails and finding computer donations to community outreach and media relations.

If you have time to spare, then volunteering can be quite rewarding. If you wish, after 24 hours of service you can receive your own computer, or choose a person/organization to donate it to if you don't need one.

If you are a leader or want to develop leadership skills then working with one of our dedicated volunteers on your own initiative can be rewarding.

Mentor Program / Instructor Program

Do you enjoy working with people? Can you explain technical computer jargon using metaphors like cars, sports and fashion?

Then instruction may be what you want to do. Mentors act as a point of contact for people to reach as they learn new technology. Instructors deliver courses and training lessons on using the hardware and software to the end user.
