Computers for Communities Open Meeting Invitation
Location
We believe that no one should be left on the wrong side of the digital divide. We believe that through volunteering and skills development individuals will learn about computer technology and thus build the potential of their community. We believe that we can help build the bridge across the digital divide in our National Capital Region.
According to Statistics Canada (2006) Approximately 54,000 households in the National Capital region are without access to a computer. Over 67,000 households are not connected to the Internet. We believe that by offering people opportunities to develop skills and earn a themselves a computer we can narrow this gap.
Since January 2010, Computers for Communities (C4C) has been in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa (BGC). BGC has provided our volunteers with workshop space for our Sunday hands on workshops. These workshops have been a big success and are growing in popularity.
In turn, C4C has committed to deploying ome of the extra computers volunteers have refurbished to families serviced by BGC who do not currently have computers. We believe this will build a stronger community and provide these families with new opportunities.
Our pilot project has had many successes in its short operating time, including recruiting new volunteers, a number of volunteers who have earned themselves a computer through volunteering for 24 hours and we have seen a lot of skills development and training along the way.
I would like to invite you to an open meeting this Sunday (1pm May 16) at the Boys and Girls Club to learn what challenges and opportunities C4C is currently facing. There is a role for everyone to play
We will also share what successes we have had and what new developments are coming our way. Our organization is growing quickly, which confirms that we have a good recipe.
Spaces are limited to 20 people so if you are interested, please don't hesitate. If you know of others who might be interested please pass along this e-mail. If you can not make it but have ideas please share them with me directly or through our mailing list (see link in
