Wheelchair Accessible Computer Tables Looking for a Home in Ottawa
Submitted by samper.d on Thu, 09/02/2010 - 04:37Computers for Communities (C4C) works with many local partners to ensure that refurbished computers can find homes with those who face barriers to accessing technology.
C4C is currently working with another organization in Ottawa to find home(s) for three Wheelchair accessible computer tables before they land in a dumpster.
Due to some crossed lines in communication this has become a time sensitive issue as the organization is moving at the end of the month and the tables will not be moving with the organization.

New Event Tool
Submitted by samper.d on Sun, 03/07/2010 - 12:35Location
Hey Folks,
The event listing tool we have on our website has not been working for a
number of months, and thus we have been using our mailing list.
In the effort to lift the burden of RSVPing for our events we have an
interim solution. It is an application sitting on another website that
among other things can manage events.
To get to it you can go to our main website
(/). Under the "Volunteer" menu follow
the activity calendar link.
or here is a direct link (hard to remember):
Community Computer Labs
Submitted by samper.d on Wed, 08/26/2009 - 11:42It has been a while since my last post, as usual.
That is the wonderful thing about a blog, post whatever when ever.
So when I post something I would hope it is important enough to strike a chord with people.
We have had a growing success with our first Community Computer Lab. This is great and gave us the push to move forward trying to secure a few more.
All told, our goal is 10 Community Computer Labs in the city of Ottawa and surrounding areas.
New Minimum Specs and Provincial Recycling
Submitted by samper.d on Thu, 04/23/2009 - 13:09Previously we had no minimum specification for machines coming through. That was before the start of Ontario's provincial E-Waste recycling program (http://www.ontarioelectronicstewardship.ca/).
Now we can still maintain our environmental and social mandates while not having to accept all obsolete technology.
We will accept at minimum any computer that is at least a Pentium II, Mac G4, or equivalent AMD and similar architectures.
If you are in doubt contact us and we can help.

Used RAM brings new life to old computers
Submitted by samper.d on Thu, 10/16/2008 - 22:38Hey Folks,
The SDRAM I had been waiting for came in the mail today. 4 x 128 Meg SIMS.
I dedicated enough ram to a desktop machine to hopefully get GNOME up and running instead of xFCE. Although slim and lightweight, it will become a challenge to support multiple desktop environments, so at least GNOME and KDE are common enough.
Damn RAM
Submitted by samper.d on Tue, 10/14/2008 - 19:36So far the FGO project is proving to be a project worthy of the interest of several people, companies and organizations.
The concept is pretty simple. Take old computers and make them useful again for people that may not have access to computers. extend that into the concept of sweat equity (Volunteerism with a reward) and you have the makings of a pretty fun time.
